Dental Inlays and Onlays

Our general dentists use white fillings to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay. However, in certain situations, a white filling may not be large enough or strong enough to provide a result that meets our standards.

When restoring whole or large parts of front and back teeth, sometimes inlays and onlays need to be used. These restorations are better suited to areas where biting forces are higher.

Dental Inlays and Onlays Sidcup - Dental Elegance

The Difference in Inlays and Onlays

A dental inlay is a small, pre-moulded filling that fits within the grooves on the biting surface of your tooth. Inlays are a single, solid piece restoration made to fit your tooth specifically. We take impressions of the damaged area once we have cleaned it, and create an inlay that fits your tooth just right. The dental inlay will be cemented in place, restoring the look and function of your tooth.

A dental onlay is a facing which restores and replaces the whole biting surface, including the higher points around the edge of your tooth. Onlays are the middle ground between inlays and dental crowns. They require less tooth cutting than crowns, therefore preserve as much natural tooth surface as possible whilst being virtually as strong as crowns.

Materials for Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays can be made of either ceramic (including porcelain) or gold.

The advantages of ceramics are that they can be colour-matched to the remaining tooth, and as they are chemically bonded to the tooth, the result is quite strong.

Gold’s distinct advantage is that it can be made very thin and still maintain its strength. This material can be useful on back teeth where there is very little space for tooth restoration.

Jaw Pain and Tooth Wear

Many patients have small errors in their bite which make them put their teeth together in a position of comfort rather than the right position. An apt metaphor to an incorrect bite is like having a stone in your shoe — you may not limp as a result, but you may strain the muscles you use to accommodate the inconvenience.

The way your teeth make contact when they bite together is known as occlusion. Your jaw muscles compensate for a problematic bite, and as a result the muscles never relax. An incorrect bite forces jaw muscles to work in an uncoordinated fashion, tiring them out quickly. This muscle strain is often the source of jaw pain.

Bite irregularities can cause different symptoms in patients, including:

Our elite team of dentists performs minor bite adjustments often. We can help your jaw muscles relax when the teeth close together by helping the jaw joint work the way it is designed.

We often diagnose jaw pain by fitting a small appliance over your teeth. If your pain disappears after wearing the device for a few weeks, we move forward with your long-term treatment options.

Bite Problems and Restorative Dentistry

If you require a lot of work on their teeth, particularly your back teeth, we prefer to remove the bite irregularity before commencing a restorative treatment. As long as we can show that the jaw joint is healthy, minor bite adjustment treatment can be carried out before replacing old fillings and crowns.

We create models of your teeth, so we can check the changes, and ensure we can complete the bite adjustment easily.

After we correct the bite and the results are stable, we can complete the restorative dentistry treatment.

Tooth Grinding and Clenching (Bruxism)

Many people are completely unaware that they grind their teeth, but most do. Research shows up to 80 percent of the population grind their teeth at night in some capacity. In addition, approximately 20 percent of people continue grinding and clenching habits during the day.

There are two reasons patients grind their teeth:

  1. A bite error. You can subconsciously grind away at a tooth that is in the way, potentially causing dental issues and muscle pain.
  2. A neurological reason. In this instance, your brain tells you to grind your teeth, and it is unlikely that anything can be done to stop it from happening.

Anti-Snoring Appliances

Over 40 percent of adults snore, but it can take them up to 18 years before they seek help to rectify the issue.

What is Snoring?

Snoring occurs when the airflow is partially obstructed at the back of the throat, causing noisy vibrations during sleep. In many cases, snoring doesn’t wake the snorer, but likely disturbs the person who shares the same room or living space.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)?

OSA is a serious condition which occurs when the throat muscles relax completely, and the airway fully closes at various intervals during sleep. At times, the sufferer stops breathing and may wake gasping for air.

OSA can have severe side effects on the sufferer’s everyday life including feeling exhausted, wanting to doze off at any time, and having an inability to concentrate.

An Anti-Snoring Device for a Better Night’s Rest

Many anti-snoring appliances on the market have been reported as too bulky, or they have restricted movement. In either instance, the appliance is uncomfortable to wear. We offer a more streamlined and comfortable anti-snoring device. Our appliances allow movement of the jaw from side to side, and they still prevent the sufferer from snoring. We have two appliances that the dentist can prescribe, and we will direct you toward the design that best suits your individual needs.
